Taiwan’s $1 billion automobile giant SYM readies to bring advanced two wheeler technologies to India via its alliance with Kinetic

Pune, February 9th, 2006

Further to the announcement of acquiring an 11.1% stake in Kinetic Motor Company, top management of the Taiwanese two-wheeler major, Sanyang Industry Co Ltd (SYM), addressed the media today, during which SYM’s Vice Chairman, Mr. Taka Huang, elaborated on the SYM-Kinetic association.

SYM plans to introduce its advanced technology platforms in India through its association with Kinetic. SYM’s Research & Development lab has developed and perfected key technologies such as four valve engines, ceramic-coated cylinder engines which offer extraordinary durability and longevity (with “lifetime warranty), one-piece cylinder head 4v, MIS intelligent ignition system and steadlite water resistant alloy cylinder technology. SYM has also developed and commercially marketed models with fuel-injection technology, which is becoming a crucial technology input with tighter emission norms such as Euro 3 on the anvil.

SYM makes a complete range of two wheelers – including scooters and motorcycles – with remarkably smooth engine performance and low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The first launch from the SYM-Kinetic alliance is expected within the next nine months.

SYM holds three major production bases – in Taiwan, China and Vietnam (including an R&D center) and exports their vehicles around the world, including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. Kinetic is also expected to benefit from SYM presence in other countries through export synergies. The two companies also plan to explore other strategic synergies such as sourcing of components, aggregates or entire vehicles from India, which will enhance SYM’s global competitive position especially in scooters.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Taka Huang said,” I am really excited to be flagging off our presence in one of the world’s most important two-wheeler markets. We plan to bring to India our advanced technology and hope that the customers here will receive them as well as other countries have. Our team is impressed with Kinetic’s facilities, distribution network and management and we are looking forward to working together. “

Kinetic Chairman, Mr. Arun Firodia, said, “This alliance will enable us to expand our business in India as well as other countries. Kinetic has introduced superior global technology to the Indian market over the last two decades through its global tie-ups and has always been appreciated by the people in India. We look forward to bringing out the best products with new generation engine technology for the Indian masses through this technical collaboration with SYM.”
